Joshua Tree in April 2026: How to Beat the Crowds and Enjoy the "Other" Side of the Desert
April is peak season in the High Desert for a reason. With the 2026 Joshua Tree Gem and Mineral Show kicking off the month (April 1–5) and perfect 75-degree hiking weather, the park can get busy. If you want to experience the magic of the Mojave without the wait times at the West Entrance, this is your insider guide to doing April right.
1. Use the "Secret" Entrances
The West Entrance in Joshua Tree Village is iconic, but during April weekends, it can have wait times exceeding an hour.
-
The Pro Move: Enter through the North Entrance in Twentynine Palms. It’s usually much faster and drops you right near popular spots like Arch Rock and Skull Rock.
-
The Southern Route: If you’re coming for the wildflowers, use the Cottonwood Spring (South) Entrance. It’s the gateway to the best low-elevation blooms and is often the quietest part of the park.
2. Catch the 2026 Spring Events
April 2026 is packed with local culture that most tourists miss:
-
Gem & Mineral Show (April 1–5): A massive local tradition at the Sportsmans Club. It’s free, family-friendly, and full of rare desert treasures.
-
Know Other Festival (April 17–19): For those looking for the "New Desert" vibe, this boutique festival at the Lake Campground offers an intimate alternative to the massive Coachella crowds.
-
Yoga Festival (April 24–26): End the month with a reset. This festival celebrates the spiritual side of the desert with classes under the open sky.
3. Hike the "Quiet" Trails
Skip the crowded Hidden Valley loop and try these instead:
-
North View Trail: Located near the West Entrance but far less traveled, offering incredible views of the Coachella Valley.
-
Contact Mine: A moderate hike near the North Entrance that leads to an abandoned gold mine—perfect for those who want history without the crowds.
4. Sunset at Mojave Gold
Instead of fighting for a parking spot at Keys View for sunset, head to Mojave Gold in Yucca Valley. It’s a local favorite for "Dance Therapy" sessions and sunset vibes that feel authentic to the Hi-Desert community.
5. Your Private Desert Oasis
The best way to beat the April crowds? Don't leave your rental. The beauty of a Hi-Desert Dwellings home is the acreage. Most of our properties are situated on private lots where you can see the same wildflowers and rock formations found in the park, but from the comfort of your own fire pit or cowboy pool.
